Yasir Abdullah has always been a very talented guy with a bright future in the Bryan Brown system. The 6-foot-1, pound Abdullah has made 15 starts in 35 career games during his career and got better and better as the season went on. He had 25 of his total 33 tackles in the final six games of the season. Abdullah looked so much better in the final few games, and he continued that trajectory in spring ball.
Abdullah was not a surprise in spring ball but he made an improvement. Perhaps the most talked-about player - certainly among the newcomers - during spring ball was true freshmen defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte. The 6-foot-3, pound Gillotte received rave reviews from the coaches and his fellow teammates.
He's coming along very, very nicely. His athletic ability is going to take him a long way. The skinny: Gillotte will see snaps and he will see them early and often; expect him to be one of the first newcomers on the field. The new Sports text alerts are now available for you to get in on. U of L wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer said during an interview mid-way through spring ball that Watkins was a guy that had flashed.
He will be a big key into what we do. The skinny: With the losses of Dez Fitzpatrick and Tutu Atwell on offense, Watkins will become one of the go-to guys for the Cardinals. Former Virginia Tech offensive lineman Bryan Hudson isn't in our projected starting lineup at the moment. The 6-foot-4, pound Hudson played in 21 games in two years at Virginia Tech, including 10 starts at center as a freshman, and transferred to Louisville in December and enrolled in January.
He was impressive for the U of L staff during spring ball. Hudson is likely going to be listed as the backup center heading into fall camp, but could also play either of the guard positions. The skinny: If he doesn't start, Hudson will likely be used like Cam DeGeorge last season - at a number of spots on the line.
Renato Brown played in four games during the season and started every game at right tackle last season. The 6-foot-4, pound Brown was solid but at times would make a mistake that the coaching staff would chalk up to being a youngster. Well, from all indications he grew up a lot during the season. New offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr.
Brown really made strides during spring ball for the Cardinals. The skinny: By all indications, Brown made a major jump during spring ball, which should make the offensive line much stronger. Gregory Desrosiers came to Louisville prior to last season as a walk-on from Belmont, Mass.
The 5-foot, pound Desrosiers played in four games last season on special teams but was moved from wide receiver to running back prior to spring ball.
U of L coach Scott Satterfield said Desrosier has put on 25 pounds since arriving and there was a lot of chatter about him during spring camp. He was a guy that had much better vision than I anticipated from the running back position. The skinny: Desrosiers will see snaps at running back; the staff loves what he brings the offense and I expect to see him carry the ball some.
